Surfing Costa Rica with Kids: Friendly Surf Trip Guide.

Ultimate Hammock Nap
Ultimate Hammock Nap

I've lived in Costa Rica since 2019, my daughter was born here in 2023 and we've traveled all over the country to surf as a family over the last two years. Let me give you some tips of where to go, where to stay, and how to make traveling with a baby or toddler fun for your whole family.

Having a baby didn't shy our family away from traveling, and since she was born we have been to Spain, Portugual, El Salvador, California and my home town in Alaska. In my experience Costa Rica is by far the easiest place to travel with a young child, and sometime you even recieve preferential treatment, like being able to skip lines at the airport. Unlike traveling in the United States, people are very happy to have young kids and babies around!

Best Places to Visit:

Santa Teresa

This beautiful beach town that we are lucky enough to call home is full of families with young kids. You can pass the day at the beach and your little ones will be sure to make friends with other kids in the sand and ocean. Head to the beach during low tide when it's easier for kids to play in the ocean. Our surf camp has a great swimming pool, family room and private houses all in the same property that is just a few minutes walk from the beach. We rent surf and boogie boards and have lessons for all ages! If you and your partner are both surfers and need someone to watch your kids while you catch waves, we can set you up with a nanny that can stay on the beach with your little ones while you surf.

Let us know if you need anything highchairs, cribs, toys, life jackets, we will be happy to accommodate!

Getting around:

It's best to rent a car if you are traveling with kids, prices range for $30 - $60 a day depending on the season. It's best to reserve online, you will get a better deal than if you make the reservation at the counter. You can either rent the car from which ever international airport you arrive to, or save yourself a day of driving and fly into the domestic Airport in Cobano and pick up your rental car there. Kids under 2 fly for free on the domestic airlines that are costaricagreenairways or flysansa.

What to bring:

As mentioned before any bigger items we will be able to provide for you like cribs, or high chairs. You can rent car seats with the rental car agencies as well. Santa Teresa has many groceries stores that have everything you will need as far as diapers, sunscreen, baby food, etc. Bringing a stroller with big tires is nice if you're family likes to walk along the beach. Making sure you have hats and long sleeve swim clothes is important. Even if you think your kids are used to the sun, we are very close to the equator and the sun here is strong! Beach toys like shovels and buckets are also sold at all the grocery stores.

Things to Do:

Expect to spend a lot of time at the beach! Rent a boogie board and bring a hammock and cooler with drinks and fruits. You're kids will not want to leave!
